Chapter 19
Dave couldnât believe his luck after getting two cases with a connection. He divided his time between both. Dottyâs gran must have wondered why she had suddenly become so popular. She was a useful person to talk to, having all her faculties about her and an opinion that couldnât be ignored. By attending the care home when Dotty was there, Dave hoped to find out more about Kateâs movements. He must tread carefully though. He had already rubbed Millicent up the wrong way. If Kate discovered he was on to her, she may have him removed from the premises.
So far, he had drawn a blank around any potential partners. There were no men linked to her social media accounts that popped up regularly. He couldnât rule out a woman but had found no one who sparked his interest. Following her to and from work brought up nothing. He passed on his initial report to Mark who was keen for the investigations to continue.
Today, he had a meeting planned with Dawn. She wasnât as easy to please. He hoped that a visit to her home may reveal more. He almost missed the entrance to the large-detached property set back from the road. Thankfully, his sat nav knew where to stop. Dawn was one customer he didnât want to be late for.
âDo come in Mr West.â Dave hated formality and even though he had told Dawn this, she still insisted on calling him by his surname. She was dressed less formally today with her navy padded gilet over a white cashmere jumper and smart denim jeans. âIâve had a busy morning. I collected more of mumâs belongings from the home. Itâs been hectic sorting everything out today.â
âHow have you been?â he asked.
âI have my ups and downs. I think Iâm doing okay and then a wave of sadness comes over me and knocks me down again. Itâs difficult to comprehend how she could be there one minute full of life then gone.â She drew a tissue out of a box and wiped a tear from the corner of her eye. âThe doctor has given me sleeping tablets but theyâre not stopping my head churning over everything. They wonât shut out what happened.â
âIt will take time.â
âItâs not so much that. The coroner must be an idiot saying she died from natural causes. I canât accept his findings, or should I say â lack of findings.â
Dawn told him there had now been an inquest, but the family still disputed the outcome. Dave was keen to find out any developments with the appeal.
âNo, thereâs no news on that score. These things take time.â Dawn sat down and Dave removed his black leather gloves. He took a sheet from his briefcase and passed the preliminary report to Dawn. After opening his copy, he discussed it with her. He read through the coronerâs summary to establish why the case hadnât given an open verdict. It was due to Simoneâs illness. He knew that if someone had
